Kantha Quilts, A Thousand Year Old Indian Craft
The art of Kantha is a traditional craft dating back to ancient India where quilts were made from old clothing such as frayed saris and dhotis, layered and stitched together. Kantha also refers to the distinctive running stitch used production.
Over time, kantha developed as artistry with skills being passed down from mother to daughter. Elaborate kanthan were made as wedding gifts with stories, history and wishes weaved in.
Each piece of kantha was unique. Although some symbols and motifs were universal - the Sun often featuring as a focal point - each design depended on the creator's individual technique and colour scheme often featuring animals, birds and the ocean. It was a handicraft that belonged to communities and was influenced by Colonial rule and Portuguese traders. During the British rule in the 18th and 19th Centuries there was a decline in handicrafts although Kantha continued to be practices in rural areas.
There is a resurgence in this traditional craft as people are seeking one-of-a-kind items to furnish their homes. Although not made from recycled cloth, our quilts are made in Jaipur by skilled, local workers. Most of the stitching is done by local women giving them an opportunity to earn an income.
